"Now, Robert Fidler is, by any standards, an accomplished handyman. Not only has he built an outward-bound centre for children in his own back garden, complete with a go-karting circuit and a two-acre lake big enough for water-skiing, but he has spent several holidays constructing 100 new homes for poor families in an impoverished district of Ghana.
Even those projects, though, are modest compared to his handiwork beneath that tarpaulin-covered straw mountain.
For lurking within was a thumping great country house - a mini-castle, no less. Not only did Robert manage to build the entire thing without being spotted by his friends and neighbors by concealing it for six years behind a 40 foot hay bale wall."
(he tried to do it legitimately, but the Town Council kept turning him down)
"Only one house seems to be overlooking this one and it's a good quarter of a mile away through the trees. Chateau Fidler is hardly intruding on anyone."
"He married Linda, who gamely moved into the tiny flat at the back of the office, but the couple wanted to build a proper home. Robert applied for permission to convert a disused Victorian cowshed into a house, but the council did not reply for a year.
When he pursued the matter, he found that he had already missed the deadline to appeal and his application was, therefore, void. He was then told that a repeat application would be rejected.
But by now, Linda was expecting Harry. And that is when Robert started planning his secret castle beneath the straw."
Fight on, Fidler...
