a bar brawl...
Jul. 2nd, 2006 02:12 am...would have made the evening complete.
As it was, it wasn't exactly boring. Went to the top rated restaurant-bar, "M on the Bund/The Glamour Bar" in Shanghai to celebrate with the other FTs, since most of us are leaving at various times next week. couldn't get a spot on the terrace, but managed to enjoy ourselves in high style anyway. Left in search of dancing/better music, but the place we were aiming for had doubled their cover charge, so we decided to give it a miss and take a cab to O'Malleys a bit early to get ready to watch the ENGLAND game vs. Portugal.
Got to O'Malleys, which was SWARMING. We couldn't get seats, just stood in sweaty, swaying rows in the mud staring at the jumbo screen and drinking beer...it was GREAT. it would have been better if i wasn't in high heels the whole time, and my friend nearly passed out from the heat/low blood sugar, but it was still great...the singing, the totally international crowd, the complete fixation on the game, etc. I had a cool seat on a window ledge for a while but then the staff made me get down, and I had to stand on my feet again, ouch. (Shanghai really kills the feet, that's why there are foot massage places everywhere.) Our stamina ran out with the clock, and we caught a cab back to Minhang and were listening to the game in the cab for the final shootout. Unfortunately, our cabbie must have been a bit too engrossed listening as well, because he failed to notice that the streetlights at an intersection had gone out, and cruised through, and we were broadsided by another car.
Luckily, no one was hurt, just a bit shaken, and we paid the fare and left the smoking and steaming car (apparently in China you don't wait around to file a police report) and started walking until we all felt footsore enough again to call a second taxi for the remaining distance. And England lost.
And now I'm posting right away because I'm a bit too amped for bed, and it's only 2. Maybe I'll just kill some time til the next game, should be on in half an hour...
and I believe that makes Car Accident Number Three, unless I'm forgetting some. lucky lucky. seriously.
