craaazy weekend, haven't been around much and now the Vaio is malfunctioning again (perhaps the heat?) so pics will have to wait...
got a haircut which was nervewracking because at a certain point you just start laughing when the hairtiste doesn't understand your panicked exclamations to stop cutting....then went to a cool outdoor bar called "Barbarossa" downtown next to the Art Gallery in People's Square, where I got rooked for "Ladies Night" by not requesting one of the nonspecified three magical cocktails which were being comped that night, but oh well...met up with two cool Californian chicks there and we formed a posse and went somewhere better...to "Bar Rouge", a kickass bar on the Bund with a GREAT dj. outdoors and indoors with a spectacular view, interesting people, many of whom consider themselves the masters of the universe,  and it was a great time. took a taxi all the way from the Bund to my apartment, which was rather expensive but necessary at the time, 'cause I didn't see many taxi options at 4 am when i got closer to home, and of course the subway was long, long closed (although I could have hung out for a few more hours and *then* ridden home, now that I think about it...hmmmm)
Anyways, the next day, got up painfully early to throw some gear in a bag and go with the staff of the college on a departmental "vacation"/weekend trip, pics and details coming in another post, got back yesterday evening.

Catching up on email and things, and just found out there is a consular warning issued for foreign China residents...there's been a terrorist threat against Americans/American business in China.  I get all the consular mailing list warnings for different countries, so the language of the warning was very standard and non-specific...the usual "outdoor cafes, nightclubs, major businesses, consulates, places of worship" etc. But I've also heard that the gov't might shut down the CBD (Central Business District) this coming Friday for some sort of undeclared "holiday"...no one knows why yet, and it's just a rumor from an Australian paper ...but you never know. Maybe this is why. Dunno how China would want to publicize or deal with a terrorism threat, especially with the Olympics coming up and all...they want to look safe, in control, etc.  hmmm.
this coming weekend, i'm heading with the other teachers out of town anyway to Huangshan for a killer hike. it's really hot here today. off to give/grade finals...
